Best of 2017: Our Favorite Surprising Moments in Interiors

I couldn’t resist doing a roundup of some of the more unexpected moments from 2017 home tours. From home trapezes to stained glass windows and visits to house boats, this year brought us some amazing moments that expanded our ideas of what homes could be and how we could make them feel more like our own. xo, Grace

Image above: What could be more surprising than a home trapeze? This Victorian home featured an amazing detail we never saw coming — but couldn’t get enough of

This stained glass refuge provided one of our most unexpected moments in interiors this year. The beautiful animal figures made of colored glass were a huge hit.

We’re so used to covering homes on land (mountains! fields! beaches!), so this serene house boat was a welcome surprise.

This Madrid home featured the unexpected – but wonderful – decision to paint bright green shutters.

This Chicago rental renovation used book pages to create a one-of-a-kind bedroom wallpaper.

One of the most surprising hits of this year? This cat’s Kodak moment (from this Portland home tour) and that bold “I’m ready for my close-up” stare.

This Ontario home’s modern makeover included a fun and surprising glass addition.

This Portland treehouse reminded us that it’s okay to dream of “grown-up” tree houses, because those dreams can come true.

We couldn’t get enough of the nautical feel and unusual shape of this Oysterville, MA home and its bright yellow door.

We loved this “little cottage on the prairie” and its salvaged wood wainscoting – it was a fun and unexpected detail in this renovation.
