One of the greatest joys of working at Design*Sponge has been working alongside our food & drinks editor, Kristina Gill, for so many years. She has introduced us to such incredible cookbook authors, cooks, essayists and food makers and this year it was hard to pick just a few favorite recipes to share. So if you’re ready to start cooking, scroll down to see 14 of our favorite recipes and dishes from 2017! –Grace
Image above: The Ultimate Cream Cheese Cinnamon Rolls made with sweet potato dough came from freelance food editor and chef Mary-Frances Heck. (Hello, holiday breakfast!)
While it’s not always fresh fig season, when it is, a tart like this is just the ticket. Jordan Bourke’s Healthy Fruit Frangipane Tart is a great way to use what’s best in the season without going too heavy on sugar.
I cannot resist this photo of Marcela Valladolid’s Churros. They are as tasty as they are beautiful.
The Easiest Lemon Poundcake? Sign me up. Robin Broughton-Smith’s Lemon Pound Cake is a great go-to when you want to bake something simple and delicious.
For the vegetarians in your life (or yourself!), this recipe for Tandoori Spiced Cauliflower by Anjum Anand is not just a great side, it would make an excellent entree, too!
This recipe for sweet Somali flatbread, malawah, and spiced milk tea isfrom Halimo, a former Somali restaurateur in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya
Did someone say “Buttery Chocolate and Sour Cherry Brioche Buns“? Yep, I’m in. Julia Busuttil Nishimura’s recipe is the perfect way to kick off a weekend meal.
These healthy Baked Apple Oatmeal Squares come from Julia Turshen’s Feed the Resistance cookbook. I was lucky to taste-test these along the way and they’re as helpful for feeding a group as they are a small family… when you’re a small family like ours that likes to nosh on healthy treats all day like we do.
Molly Yeh’s Chocolate Tahini Cake is so adorable in these tiny cut-out forms. Perfect for a special occasion or just, you know, a regular old Friday.
These Gluten-Free Persian Love Cakes from Sweet (by Yotam Ottolenghiand Helen Goh) might be the prettiest recipe we’ve posted all year. They’re the perfect combination of delicious and well-designed.
Dumpling Galaxy’s Spicy Beef Dumplings have winter comfort food written all over them.
Nicoise Salad is one of my go-to meals any time of the year because it’s so simple and can easily be changed to suit what you have in your fridge or pantry. Hetty McKinnon’s Kinda-Niçoise with Fried Green Beans, Roasted Kale, Lentils, Steamed Eggs, and Caper Mayo is now a new favorite. That caper mayo is delicious.
Burma Superstar is one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area, and pretty much anywhere else, and their Chicken with Mint recipe is such a perfect dish for any time of the year.
Last but not least, these Crisp and Chewy Cardamom-Rose Gingersnaps by Kathryn Pauline, author of the blog Cardamom and Tea, are going to the top of my must-make list.
