I have a deep understanding for someone who is a planner. I get it, I really do. I have been a planner since I was a little girl, organized to a fault. Clara Jung of Banner Day Consulting is the same way. “I left my career as an attorney three years ago to start my own design firm,” Clara shares. “As a lifelong rule follower and planner, I was terrified. I actually didn’t tell my parents I quit my job until a couple of months after the fact.” Leaving her corporate lawyer job to pursue her creative interests was a big risk and she worried about letting her parents down while making the leap. As a designer, Clara is now able to fulfill her needs, make her parents proud of her, and certainly create a beautiful home.
After spending time in Berkeley, CA during undergrad while attending UC Berkeley, Clara was glad to make the move back to the area with her husband. The Jungs just moved into their new home six months ago from San Francisco after moving around the East Bay since 2012. So while the space is still new and in flux, Clara shares, “I want to see how the house breathes before we make any changes.” Drawn to the neighborhood — which escaped the 1991 Berkeley and Oakland fires — with towering redwoods everywhere and homes full of personality, the couple couldn’t believe it when their offer was accepted. “Although the home has been updated, a lot of the details I love in older homes remain, such as all the original windows, molding, and a wonderful fireplace,” Clara says. At times, being a designer has put a lot of pressure on Clara in any home they have lived in to have a space that feels more like a showroom, but fortunately she tried to keep things as functional as possible this time around. “I want my home to be a place where friends and family can hang out comfortably without worrying about whether they’re going to scratch or damage something. I try to create a house that is full of history, layers and brightness.”
These are great rules to live by, no matter your profession. I hope you enjoy this peek into such a welcoming home. —Erin
