Without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges I faced during my 10 months of chemotherapy last year was not being able to fly anywhere. In order to scratch the traveling itch, I’d often lie in my hospital bed and use the power of memory to whisk me away instead. One of the destinations that frequently occupied my thoughts was Charleston, SC, a place with some of the most beautiful streets I’ve ever seen. While on a history tour there in 2003, I learned how the city’s taken the time to number each of the cobblestones in their oldest roads so that after they’ve been removed and cleaned they can be placed back in the exact same spot where they were originally laid hundreds of years ago.
Over a decade after my visit, I’m thrilled to report the city’s eagle-eyed focus on putting their history first hasn’t wavered. And the immaculately maintained home of artist Lulie Wallace proves it. Purchased from the president of the Charleston Historical Preservation Society, the century-old abode boasts original fireplaces, molding and enviable, built-in cabinetry. Needless to say, the Wallace family landed a fabulous move-in-ready option. All it required was a bit of modernizing to make it perfect for Lulie, her husband Harrison and their daughter Edy.
The process began with some structural renovations that, while slight, did displace the family for a bit. It wasn’t a problem though. Lulie and Harrison just camped out on the sofas of six of their closest friends while the team of builders went to work. Over the course of four months the crew refinished floors, revamped the kitchen and added in the finer details that would eventually set Lulie up for success once the decorating process got underway.
Unafraid of being bold, Lulie didn’t hold back when it came time to design. Instead she amplified the more modern updates as well as the home’s original details through a collection of colorful prints and patterns from her own textile collection. The living room, in particular, holds many of these gems. Look above the fireplace, and you’ll find some of her original artwork. Peek opposite it, and sunlight cascades through curtains in fabric by Lulie’s own hand. Below that, a lampshade in a floral motif, one of her staples, calls for you to unwind with a book in the halo of its glow.
Overall, Lulie’s touch is all over this gorgeous home and is, without a doubt, the reason it is such a looker. Scroll down to see every compelling facet she’s so thoughtfully incorporated into her family’s nest. You won’t regret it. —Garrett
