When Kristin and Scott Laing first moved to Austin, TX, they never intended to stay for too long. Now, 19 years later, they couldn’t feel more at home and have no plans to leave. The city has turned out to be an ideal place to raise their eight-year-old daughter Fiona, the family’s artistic computer whiz. When Fiona started school, Kristin and Scott knew exactly what area would best suit their family’s needs. They moved to a neighborhood with a strong sense of community and an excellent school system, not to mention plenty of beautiful, mature trees. “It is a planned community and many of the homes have similar floor plans,” Kristin explains. “We were okay with that, but when our house came on the market it was one-of-a-kind with a very different exterior and kind of a strange floor plan.” On top of standing out from the rest, Kristin and Scott loved the house for the stunning landscaping that had been designed by the previous owners. Despite some original 80s features that felt outdated, Kristin knew that the house could be turned into something special for her family.
Kristin, who works as the Creative Director for a small company, also does interior and photo shoot styling and creative consulting. Together with Scott, who creates fitness tracking apps for Under Armour Connected Fitness, she has worked hard to turn her family’s home into a unique and welcoming place that always feels like a warm hug. During the five years that the family has owned their house, they have completed both smaller and larger updates. From installing breathtaking mural wallpaper in the master bedroom to completely gutting and redoing the bathroom, each step has made the house more reflective of its new owners. As an avid decorator, Kristin loves to change things up and add new creative touches when inspiration hits. The latest project involves breathing new life into the family’s dark office. The ongoing renovation includes adding a skylight to brighten up the room, and creating a functioning and inspiring workspace for the whole family.
One of Kristin’s major sources of inspiration is the juxtaposition between old and new. She has always been inspired by multi-generational family homes, where various family members have left their own marks throughout the years. It is with this mentality that Kristin set about decorating her own family’s home — although it was built in the 80s, antiques, thrifted finds and vintage pieces make the house feel older and full of life. “I’ve always wanted it to look like an old home that’s been lived in forever and has a soul,” Kristin explains. With a collected feel-good vibe, each room in Kristin, Scott and Fiona’s home feels more inviting than the next.
