Before & After: A Stylish Bedroom on a Budget in Toronto

A Stylish Bedroom on a Budget in Toronto | Design*Sponge

After 15 years in marketing, Michelle Binette has started a new career in interior decorating. Michelle’s approach to interior design and decorating is that it should be beautiful, approachable and suit the client’s stylistic goals and financial limitations. One of Michelle’s first clients after launching her business was Marni, an occupational therapist and single mom  in Toronto, Ontario. Marni’s job includes several stressful cases daily and Michelle wanted to transform her bedroom from barely functioning into a relaxing retreat with function in every nook and cranny.

With any new business, there were things to work through and this project provided a lot of learning experience for Michelle. “The process for this bedroom admittedly took me longer than I had hoped, mostly because I had recently just launched my decorating business and she was one of the first clients who hired me to decorate multiple rooms in her home,” Michelle shares. One thing she didn’t have to learn was to trust her instincts when it comes to decorating. “The alcoves were the most challenging parts of the bedroom but became the parts that really gave the room the most character. By turning these nooks into focal points and functional spaces it no longer feels like we’ve just shoved furniture into open spaces.” Turning one of the alcoves into a custom barn wood headboard and the other into a vanity and crafting area anchored the space. From there, Michelle added gold and brass accents to bring warmth to the wood tones, selected a light and airy green for the walls and styled the space with a mix of colors and textures. Michelle created such a beautiful, thoughtful space for Marni to retreat to at the end of the day. Image Above: The bedroom before the makeover had great bones but no real design direction. Marni had lived in the home 5 years before enlisting the help of Michelle. Marni’s job and son were her priorities so making her bedroom a relaxing space to begin and end the day was delegated to Michelle.
