A Couple in Westchester, NY Hits Their Design Stride

Over the years I’ve written many stories about families who’ve invested a lot of time and money into their spaces in hopes of creating their “forever home.” While that’s absolutely admirable and works for some, that’s also a lot of pressure! Trying to figure out not only what your future self will want but also predicting what your family will need in five, 10 or even 15 years can be daunting. You basically have to have all the confidence of a psychic without any of the ability to back it up.

Instead of trying to tell the future, some families free themselves of all the planning and just decorate for the here and now. Meet Gianna, a nanny, and her firefighting husband, Mark. The pair knew when they settled into this 1950s-era bungalow in Westchester, NY that they’d eventually move on to find more square footage, so each design decision didn’t come with any “forever home” baggage. Because of this they’ve flipped and flopped rooms around and changed up their space’s style multiple times. I’m not talking small tweaks either. Their kitchen, for example, is streamlined now but was once covered in blue-and-grey chevron cabinetry, and what used to be a run-of-the-mill hallway has been equipped with a built-in bed and large storage area for their dog.

When reminiscing about all of the changes their home has gone through, it’s easy for Gianna and Mark to track the ways in which their taste has evolved over time. When they look closer, though, an unexpected shift is evident as well: They’ve clearly gotten into their design groove. Now, more than ever, the style of one room seamlessly flows into another, creating cohesion and harmony throughout their 1,500-square-foot home. I think you’ll agree after taking a look that without one area crying for attention, this entire house is able to sing. Enjoy! —Garrett
