When it comes to Halloween, I can go in two directions. Having grown up as a latchkey, TV-as-babysitter kid, I love celebrating a nostalgic Halloween with a good dose of humor — à la the 1960s sitcom Bewitched. The other direction is full-on craft central — filled with multiple glue guns and customized everything. Both tend to be less traditional spooky and more “can we work some pink in here?” For this little roundup of Halloween DIYs, I’m sharing some some quick and easy projects in both categories in hopes that they’ll provide you with some smiles and ways to share mounds of candy with everyone! –Caitlin
First up is one of my favorites from our archives. Taking basically found materials in the form of vintage portraits from old magazines and adding delightful, bewitching masks onto them, you’ve got some instant décor that will provide a little laughter, color and conversation to get the party started. If you’d like to make these a more permanent year-to-year decoration, seek out some true vintage portraits on eBay or Etsy and mount them on foam core or frame them. If your portraits are in a smaller format, you can always blow them up at your local copy store.
I usually just grab a large-scale vintage magazine like Life and decorate some of the full-faced adverts. These are usually available online or at your local thrift or antique store for under $10. You can see our full tutorial right here and we have a PDF with different masks to use there too. Just print them and you’re all set!
This is a great DIY to create with kids. These spider web bowls use the age-old craft technique of covering a balloon with glue and string. Popping the balloon is always a big hit with the younger set. Perhaps best of all, these cute, inexpensive bowls can be filled to the brim with candy for your trick-or-treaters. See our full tutorial here.
P.S. The spiders in the photo above were made from black, fuzzy pipe cleaners and are also super easy and fun to make with kids!
And finally we come to one of my all-time favorite motifs to incorporate into as many holidays as possible — googly eyes! While technically this DIY can be used for almost anything to add some pom pom flair, I find these puffy eyeballs are especially adorable on top of a pumpkin or two.
Get the full googly how-to here and get busy. Happy (almost) Halloween!
