10 Historic Homes for Modern Creative Families

Andrew_Mau_Door2

Historic homes will always be near and dear to my heart. Growing up in Virginia, every school year was chock-full of field trips to historic homes and I even went to college at William & Mary, where half of the campus is part of an active historical site (riding the bus to Target with people in period costume was a trip). We’ve had the pleasure of sharing so many incredible historic homes from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries here at DS, so today I wanted to honor those amazing spaces and celebrate how their creative owners have found ways to stay true to historic architecture while still embracing modern colors and design sensibilities. Here are 15 of my favorites to prove that some homes only get better with age. xo, grace

Images above: John McKinney’s Kingston, NY home (see more after the jump below!) is one of my favorite home tours we’ve ever shared. His home has survived not just the Revolutionary War and the infamous 1777 burning of Kingston, but centuries of change.
