Back when we first toured artist Bari Ackerman’s home in Scottsdale, AZ last year, she shared with us a dream about eventually updating her family’s kitchen. There wasn’t anything disastrously wrong with it, but it was 22 years old and not exactly Bari — if you’ve seen the rest of her house you’ll get the gist. The space simply longed for a few practical updates and needed to represent its fun, energetic and color-loving owners. With that in mind, Bari set out to design the kitchen she had longed for.

To kick off the design process, Bari began freely pinning anything and everything she liked or felt drawn to. She then went back to her pinboard to find the through-line, to identify the style, items, and ideas that she had pinned over and over. She then deleted anything that didn’t quite fit the bill — what was left was the backbone of the new kitchen design, bursting of personality and bold charm.

Bari’s design research quickly revealed that the kitchen was going to include black, white and green with a touch of warm wood tones. Black became the cabinet color and white was incorporated as thick marble countertops and a large farmhouse sink. As for green, Bari shares, “I’m so glad I didn’t listen to all the naysayers about green herringbone [tiles]. I knew from almost the beginning that’s what I wanted.” The deep green tiles, covering all walls and wrapping into the windowsill in a herringbone pattern — perfectly matched up in each corner — have become the ultimate highlight of Bari’s kitchen.

As Bari was her own general contractor from start to finish, she also learned a thing or two during the renovation. “My best suggestions for anyone being their own contractor is [to] pick out your appliances and read the specs backward and forward,” she says, having experienced some bumps in the road during the process. “Make sure cabinet and countertop people are on the same page,” she adds. When asked about her takeaways from the experience, Bari answers without hesitating, “It taught me to stick with my vision even when others are telling you that you are a bit [out there].” Scroll down to see how Bari transformed her kitchen into a striking space that she and her family can enjoy to the max! —Sofia
