When Kelly and Stephen Bryant got married six years ago, Stephen said he wanted a house where every room would be different. Kelly jokingly laughed it off and thought to herself, “goodness, that would be so ugly!” Little did she know that the couple wasn’t far from finding their dream home, and that Stephen’s wish would become reality.
Kelly, a stay-at-home mother, interior stylist and Instagram vintage shop owner, and Stephen, a manager in private aviation, met in Bangkok, Thailand back in 2010. Stephen was stationed there and Kelly happened to be traveling in the area. Within one year, the couple met, dated and got married — sometimes things just have a wonderful way of working out like that. Soon after, Stephen was transferred from Bangkok and found a suitable position in his hometown of Wichita, KS. Once married, Kelly packed up her life in Dallas, TX and moved in with Stephen.
After a couple years of renting, Kelly and Stephen began looking for a home of their own. They were initially set on a 1920s house in another area of the city, but after realizing the amount of maintenance required, they became open to the idea of a 1960s or 1970s ranch-style home. One day, the couple stumbled across a four-bedroom house just half a mile from their rental. At first, Stephen was not impressed — the empty house was smelly and looked outdated. Kelly, on the other hand, fell in love. She could see past the 20-year-old surfaces and recognized the potential. The beautiful wood floors, functional floor plan, sunroom addition and 8,000 square feet of outdoor space convinced her that this house could be turned into something amazing. Kelly and Stephen could tell that the house had been well kept, and it wasn’t long before the house changed owners.
For the first few months, Kelly and Stephen slept in the living room among all their belongings, while the popcorn ceilings were removed from the other rooms. When the couple found out that they were expecting their first daughter Minnie, they hired Kelly’s uncle to paint all surfaces and speed up the process. Although major fixes — like electrical work, gutting a bathroom and fixing the roof — were priorities when Kelly and Stephen moved in, they have just recently finished with the overall transformation. Many items in the family’s home are unique pieces that Kelly has found at estate sales and thrift stores — scouring vintage items has become a true passion. To share her love of old and unique things, Kelly started a vintage shop on Instagram a few months ago. She now sells a variety of her finds and posts inspiring decor pictures in between. “I love showing how you can decorate on one salary,” she explains.
Kelly and Stephen both have eclectic taste. When Kelly began decorating, she quickly realized that she was influenced by various styles and eras. Before she knew it, each room in the family’s home had a different vibe. The formal living and dining room, painted in a deep and dramatic teal, has an Asian flair. The kitchen, with Kelly’s collection of antique breadboards, is a nod to classic English country kitchens. The sunroom is a sweet and romantic space with floral patterns and needlepoint, while the master bedroom embraces a subtle Hollywood Regency feel. The couple’s daughters, Minnie and MillieBeth, enjoy Indian and Moroccan inspired rooms that spark their imaginations. Although each space is different in style, Kelly has succeeded in making it all flow in a natural and beautiful way. In the end, Stephen’s dream did come true — and Kelly couldn’t be happier about the end result! —Sofia
