Desktop Wallpaper: July 2017

Desktop Wallpaper: July 2017

It’s official you guys. We made it to the second half of the year and with the beginning of July means a new desktop to grace all your tech screens.

This month’s Designer Desktop brings a hot topic to the table through art. Created in collaboration with Raise the Caliber, an initiative created by Jessica Mindich that’s dedicated to raising awareness about gun violence through artist works, Tracy Hiner of Black Crow Studios created the Caliber collection of wallpapers. Inspired by this quote by the late Carrie Fisher,

It starts with art
art creates change
art creates hope
art inspired change
take your broken heart, turn it into art

Tracy decided to use “color bomb” paints and photography (a new creative approach for her) to turn something painful into something beautiful. The guns seen in the collection are all illegal guns that were released from evidence or turned in through gun buy-back programs around the US. They have been destroyed for the collection – so they can never destroy again – and repurposed into fine art prints and wallpapers. To Tracy, the paint surrounding the guns represents a form of release, like a freedom from the harm they have caused.

20% of all sales are donated to the Caliber Foundation to help fund gun buy-back programs across the US in cities that need it the most. Black Crow Studios is also offering an exclusive signed and numbered print to Design Milk readers for $150 (originally $250). Only 100 are made and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Enter DESIGNMILK here to access the special offer and support this amazing cause.

You can also download this month’s mesmerizing desktop wallpaper below. For the larger desktops, they’re paired with Black Crow Studios’ signature quote: “She threw away all her masks and put on her soul.”

BuzziPleat: Sculptural, Sound Absorbing Forms by 13&9 Design

BuzziPleat: Sculptural, Sound Absorbing Forms by 13&9 Design

Designed by Austrian design firm 13&9 Design, BuzziPleat is the latest sound absorbing option added to the BuzziSpace catalog of smart, modern acoustic solutions. The lightweight, large-scale forms are sculptural in nature thanks to the hand pleated layers of sound-absorbing BuzziFelt.

The team looked at ancient smocking and pleating techniques used in fashion design to arrive at the circular felt pendants. Each one is made up of folded felt that’s sewn to create tension and flexibility. With the numerous folds, the surface area increases to accomplish its goal of reducing sound.

The pendants can be hung on the walls or from the ceiling where a light source can be added for additional functionality.

There are two versions, BuzziPleat Ripple (top) and BuzziPleat Edel (bottom), and each one comes in two sizes that can be fixed to the wall or suspended.

Ceramics Made: Transforming Ceramic Waste Into Terrazzo

Ceramics Made: Transforming Ceramic Waste Into Terrazzo

Foshan, China is home to the largest and oldest ceramic factories. With its ceramics providing over 1/8 of the global construction ceramics and sustaining over 10 million Chinese, it also means that it results in tons of waste every year.

BENTU aims to reduce that waste with Ceramics Made, a sustainability project that uses ceramic waste to make terrazzo. Seeking to somehow integrate waste materials back into use in a broad, general way, they began to transform the waste product into everyday furniture that can be produced on a large scale. Thus, Ceramic Made was born. High quality furniture that is tough, even when thin, and has a sleek, classic look that would fit any space.

From Stockholm to Milan, a Focus on Sustainability

Fifteen Swedish companies and three designers took their designs on a road trip from from Sweden to Milan, Italy, to be part of an expo. This blended exhibition was curated by White, the third largest architectural studio in Europe. It showcases products that highlight the innovative designs and cultural heritage of these prominent Swedish designers.

A focus on functionality is a signature trait of Swedish design. Many of the products featured are durable, intended to be long-lasting and beautiful for generations. There is also a prominent focus on sustainability in the materials used; many of the products use sustainable raw materials, such as the the sound absorbers made from moss. Others are made from recycled materials, such as the rugs made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Other products utilize biodegradable fabrics and reclaimed wood. All are beautiful, functional and eco-friendly.

The project was an initiative by Swedish Design Goes Milan 2017 and Business Sweden, in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy. Products on display included rugs, sofas, chairs, lighting and flooring — an eclectic display that highlights the breadth and depth of current Swedish design.
