Glass Artist Byrony Lane + Best of the Web

Glass Artist Byrony Lane + Best of the Web | Design*Sponge

Stained glass is so interesting to me. I toured a really stunning Basilica a few years ago with the most incredible stained glass. The guide explained that the stained glass wasn’t just for beauty but that each window told a different story in hopes that it would inspire anyone who walked into the sanctuary. The time and artistry behind each window was breathtaking. It gave me a newfound appreciation for an art form that I had mostly forgotten about.

When I think of stained glass, I tend to picture centuries-old cathedrals or Tiffany lamps, but the medium has a place in modern-day design. A few years ago, Byrony Lane, an artist living in Cornwall, England, left her career as a graphic designer to retrain as a glass artist. She works from her studio in the coastal town of Falmouth. Byrony’s graphic design background has merged beautifully with her glass work. Her pieces are bright and minimal. Most of Byrony’s works depict botanical, landscape and abstract designs. The way her pieces illuminate and reflect when light streams through is captivating and makes me want to have them in my home to enjoy daily. –Lauren

Images above: Glass by Byrony is done with the Tiffany method of sanding down the pieces for a perfect fit. Byrony salvages rare blown glass from an artist’s dismantled studio to inspire the shape and composition of her pieces.

New finds from the web this week:

What a Babe: West Elm just launched their baby and children’s line of furniture and decor and it makes me want to be a kiddo again.

Travel with Intention: Don’t just explore the geography of a new city, explore the art and culture.

Pretty Paper: The National Stationery Show kicks off in New York this weekend with brand new lines from our favorite designers and fresh new faces.

What to Watch: 10 Documentaries on HBO for your weekend free-time (like Being Serena).

Summertime Style: These summery computer backgrounds from Designlovefest make me feel like summer is officially here, even when I’m stuck inside.

Cozy and Cool: I don’t know where to look in this gorgeous home tour with unique architectural details and mixed natural materials.
