2016 Gift Guide: Under $50

2016 Gift Guide: Under $50

When you’re out shopping for gifts, it’s easy to get carried away wanting to buy the best of the best for your family and loved ones but it’s also just as easy to feel defeated once you add up all the costs on your “To Gift” list. Fortunately, modern design is accessible at all price points (I should know, I find a lot of them on @designmilkeveryday!). If you’re on a budget like I am, check out my round up of gifts that are under $50. I promise they’re not all $49.99.

pizza-cutter-doiy

Pizza Cutter – Riviera by Doiy \\ $19
This Pizza Cutter is a quirky cool gift for the pizza lover in your life with its bike design in colors inspired by the French Riviera.

various-keytags-design

Custom Keytags by Various Projects \\ $20
Make the ubiquitous key tag not as ubiquitous by creating custom ones based on the person you’re gifting! Warning: it’s slightly addictive. I just created these six and want to buy them all!

jaime-derringer-art-print

Untitled 4 Print by Jaime Derringer \\ $44
Scout’s honor: Jaime didn’t put me up to adding this to my list. Ever since I saw this living room designed by Emily Henderson, I’ve been trying to figure out where I want to add this print in my own home.

tattly_josh_smith_golden_ratio_web_applied_02_grande

Golden Ratio Temporary Tattoo by Josh Smith for Tattly \\ $5 (for a set of 2)
I love and have gifted Tattly’s temporary tattoos before. They make great stocking stuffers and they’re a fun gift to receive. I especially love this for its simplicity and perfect proportions. ;)

torrentvaseandtumblers_btwceramics

Torrent Tumblr or Large Vase by btwceramics \\ $44
Beautiful ceramics are, at least for me, one of those gifts that I would hesitate to buy for myself (“I don’t neeeeeed it…”) but wouldn’t think twice for gifting to someone. If you know someone like me, these tumblers/vases would be a pleasant present!

makers-cards-art-of-play

Makers Playing Cards by Art of Play \ $15
If you’re like me and you have friends who are obsessed with board games, add this playing cards set to their arsenal of fun.

fort-standard-crest-bottle-opener

Crest Bottle Opener 4 (far right) by Fort Standard \\ $48
While a bottle of wine is always a good gift for the hostess with the mostest, adding a bottle opener would be the cherry grape on top.

restoration-hardware-brass-pen

Brass Pencil by Restoration Hardware \\ (on sale!) $17
Crafted in Tokyo, this writing instrument will make the average pencil look like a vintage heirloom, especially after the brass develops a patina over time.

covert-subvert-best-tee

Best Tee by Covert Subvert \\ $29
This tee with its motivational message would be a great gift for the go-getter in your life.

drink-rocks-areaware

Drink Rocks by Areaware \\ $35
What are holidays if they don’t include some spirits? These Drink Rocks look cool while keeping your drinks cool and, most importantly, undiluted.

cards-punkpost

Cards by Punkpost \\ starts at $6 (but your first card is free!)
And finally, if you’re really on a budget this year, don’t forget. Cards go a really long way. Send one using Punkpost, an app-based card-sending service that we’ve raved about before. The company sends cool, hand-written cards with extras like photos and confetti so that you can remind your favorite people just how awesome they are.

The Light-Filled Casa Zauia

architecture modern residenceWith a hillside location offering panoramic views of Algarve, Portugal, Casa Zauia by Mario Martins Atelier seems especially built for contemplation. The overall design of the residence was partially dictated by the building restrictions in the area, however, its final silhouette inspires lightness and modern simplicity.

“The house seems to rise out of the ground and nestle in the landscape. However, due to the sloping nature of its physical support, it appears to be unattached and emerges on graceful pillars, reducing the effect of the natural vegetation growing under it”, explained the architects.
design modern residenceA white horizontal box, Casa Zauia opens up towards the surrounding landscape through continuous windows. A south-facing terrace, protected from the powerful sun rays during the summer, offers opportunities for outdoor socializing. The layout of the house reinforces the idea of a contemporary shelter where family interaction is encouraged. “The one-level building and has four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, toilet, kitchen with support areas, office and living room opening

“The one-level building and has four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, toilet, kitchen with support areas, office and living room opening onto a spacious veranda and partly-covered patio, which are part of the front terrace adjoining all rooms. The pool, rectangular and elegant, is the continuation of a water mirror which pours out of the supporting wall made of exposed concrete.” We would love to know your thoughts on this modern home design in Portugal. Half-Sunk in the Dune House

architecture modern house design
Located on the island of Terschelling in the Netherlands, Dune House by Marc Koehler Architects rises over the harsh terrain, offering views of the North Sea.

Its shape resembles a wooden diamond, which varies in angle and exposure as the visual perspective shifts. According to the architects, “the forces of nature prevalent in the environment – the sea, the sunlight and the local wind patterns – determine the design in such a way as if they themselves had sculpted the house. It is above all a very contextual design and for this reason every material was chosen after close examination of the colors and textures found in the environment.”
exterior modern house designStep inside and you will discover a surprising array of interiors, where curious shapes are well emphasized by an abundance of natural light: The loft-like house recreates the experience of having a walk on the dunes in its interior as a spiraling promenade architectural around its core as one continuous path from platform to platform, each just a few steps higher than the next.

This generates very interesting spatial and visual relations between each of the rooms, but also towards the landscape as each opening in the house has been shaped, sized and positioned in a specific way, according to its function. Sustainable features of the design include the use of prefabricated wood, solar panels, and a biomass run fireplace. [Photography: Marc Koehler Architects]
