Living in an old farmhouse in Denmark means bonfires and endless summer nights in the garden, as well as frosty winter days full of hygge, the warm atmosphere that goes hand in hand with cozy and modest Danish living. Mette Skov and Claus Christensen bought their 1920s farmhouse back in 2009 and fully renovated it before moving in the following year. Mette, who works as a visual merchandiser, grew up on an old farm herself and knew she would one day want to offer her children a similar country lifestyle. With a future family in mind, Mette and Claus, a self-employed plumber, turned the farmhouse into a bohemian Scandinavian oasis that is designed for time spent together. The couple heavily focused their renovating efforts on the living area, where even larger parties can gather with ease. Achieving the living space of their dreams meant having to make some tough decisions and ultimately, some design sacrifices. To expose the old structural beams and allow for a spectacular, 26-foot ceiling height in the living area, Mette and Claus gave up their plans for a grandiose main bedroom upstairs. Despite the loss in square footage, tearing down the upper level above the living area is a decision that neither Mette nor Claus has regretted. The stunning beams, the amount of natural light and the general wow-factor more than make up for a larger bedroom!
Since moving in, Mette and Claus have welcomed two beautiful daughters, Alma and Liva, who keep their lives in the countryside busy and full of action. When the family isn’t enjoying their own garden, you’ll find them strolling down the quaint streets of Skaelskor, the closest town to the farm, or riding their bikes down to the beach, just a few minutes away. When the family spends quality time at home, they enjoy each space to the fullest. Every square inch of the old farmhouse home was designed and decorated to allow the family members to relax, feel safe and truly enjoy their surroundings — the end result, according to Mette — “a mix of Nordic and bohème.” —Sofia
