Like so many others who have settled in Oak Park, IL, Amanda and Peter couldn’t imagine leaving. “Oak Park is the center of our everything. We love our community, our friends, our church, our schools, our charities, our parks… everything,” the couple explains. When it was time to look for a new home, they didn’t think twice about staying in their beloved area. They soon came across a recently gutted and renovated classic bungalow — the house was ideal for their needs, and large enough for their daughters Sadie and Marin and three beagles, Josie, Hermione and Scarlett, to roam.
Some old Oak Park bungalows are known for their choppy layouts and lack of natural light, but thanks to the recent remodel, Amanda and Peter’s house couldn’t be more different. Each room in their home feels spacious and is full of natural light. It truly offers the family the best of both worlds — the charm of an old home, with the amenities of modern-day living.
Amanda, a partner at large law firm, and Peter, a middle school Montessori math and science teacher, have always been eco-conscious and loved the idea of filling their new home with plenty of vintage pieces. To achieve their vision before the move-in date, the couple hired Natalie Papier and Kim Daunis of Home Ec. The decorating duo helped visualize room layouts, sourced furniture and decor, and styled each space with the eclectic and bohemian flair that Amanda is so fond of. As the walls had been recently painted, Natalie and Kim focused on adding color, pattern, and lots of different textures to each space. They sourced bold wallpapers and brought in rugs, pillows, art, and plenty of plants. The most important thing was to create a fun and family-friendly environment with both the girls and the dogs in mind.
Amanda and Peter are strong supporters of dog rescue organizations and have fostered more than 20 rescue beagles, in addition to giving a loving home to their permanent furry residents. Surprisingly enough, the llama is another animal that has an omnipresence throughout the family’s eclectic home — but that’s a whole different story. A dear family friend moved to Ecuador a few years ago, and that’s where Amanda fell in love with these ubiquitous animals. To represent their fondness for dogs and llamas, the family wanted to incorporate artwork and photos of both animals into their decor.
Amanda and Peter both grew up Deadheads, and music has always been an integral part of the family’s everyday life. That 60s and 70s sense is also evident in their home, where old treasures and fun art add heaps of retro flair. The process of researching, organizing and decorating the home took a few months from start to finish, and the family couldn’t be more pleased. Their bohemian bungalow is now an ideal mix of old and new, exactly as they had envisioned it. —Sofia
