Hands down, my favorite approach to decorating is maximalism. No rules, no demands and no fear? I’m in. What I love most about houses designed with this mindset is how they’re equal parts visually arresting and evocative, the latter being where their true power lies. Peek inside any maximalist home, and immediately your mood will change. You might get excited, whisper “Wow!” and that heart rate of yours may start to ramp up as you soak in inspiring room after inspiring room. Such is the case with hairstylist Augusta Isabelle Wheeler and her husband Garrett’s vibrant Victorian. The sheer volume of decorations in their strategically-mismatched Atlanta, GA home has helped them turn its dial from “meh” to “max.”
The look comes together largely thanks to layers of sentimental mementos. The dining area, for example, acts more like a museum of the couple’s wedding day than a room. Family portraits from the event, Augusta’s flower crown and a table runner from the reception are just a few of the coveted items scattered about its table and walls. The couple says that each and every accessory, in its own way, brings to mind a different memory and makes dining-in one of the their favorite pastimes.
Incorporated with these memories is a collection of enviable vintage furniture and other finds, 90% of which was hunted down at affordable thrift shops. As if the inherent patina that comes with secondhand goods wasn’t enough, making them even more unique is the colorful twist Augusta has put on them. Whether it’s a fireplace given a lime makeover or a dresser decked out in coral and green, none of these items blend in, and all of them are fabulous. The best part of these makeovers, though, has to be the happiness they infuse into the space.
All in all, the zippiness of Augusta and Garrett’s home not only inspires us, but aims to inspire their children as well. Simply put, the creative duo hopes the out-of-the-box style they used in the home shows the kiddos that Mom and Dad are fearless, and encourages them to be fearless themselves. I couldn’t think of a better motivation to “go for it” when designing. Click through for more, and enjoy! —Garrett

Image Above: Augusta and her husband Garrett’s landlord isn’t going to let them paint the whole place’s walls anytime soon, but they did sneak one refresh under their nose: the dining room’s new hue. Augusta just couldn’t live with its previous chocolate color so she traded it in for a fresh-and-bright white.
